This Is Your Brain on Burnout 🧠🔥

How I Mistook My Burnout for ADHD, Depression — and Why Self-Mastery Was the Way Out.
Every morning, I’d sit in front of my laptop — and stare.
Not because I didn’t have things to do.
But because my brain felt like static.
I’d forget what I was saying mid-sentence.
Simple tasks took triple the time.
I’d open 12 tabs to write one email… and somehow end up researching the history of oat milk.
One day, a close friend asked,
"Are you sure you don’t have ADHD… or have you just been tired since 2021?" 😅
We laughed — but deep down, I knew something was off.
I constantly bounced between overworking and complete shutdown.
And even as a high-achieving clinician, I couldn’t diagnose the real issue: I was burnt out.
I knew what burnout looked like in my patients.
But recognizing it in myself?
That was a different story.
When Burnout Looks Like Something Else
For months, I asked myself questions like:
🧠 Do I have adult ADHD?
😞 Is this depression coming back?
😶🌫️ Why can’t I focus like I used to?
The answer was simpler — and harder — than I expected: Burnout.
But burnout doesn’t always scream. Sometimes it masks itself as forgetfulness, procrastination, zoning out, or feeling emotionally flat.
And if you’re like me — ambitious, committed, and used to performing at a high level — you don’t always see the signs until your body and brain force you to stop.
Enter the Thumb: Self-Mastery 🖐️
In my work as a burnout prevention coach, I created the 5 Finger Hand Rule™ — a framework that helps high-achievers reconnect with themselves, restore energy, and reclaim leadership from within.
Each finger represents a pillar of wellness.
But the thumb — Self-Mastery — is where it begins. Self-mastery is the pulse.
It’s what allows you to pause and ask:
🌀 What am I really feeling right now?
⚠️ What’s draining me?
🧱 Am I operating from alignment — or autopilot?
When I finally gave myself permission to slow down, reflect, and realign, everything started to shift.
I wasn’t broken.
I was burnt out.
And my body, my brain, and my spirit had been trying to tell me for months.
Why This Matters
If you’re reading this and wondering if what you’re feeling is burnout, here’s my gentle nudge:
💡 It’s not weakness.
💡 It’s not failure.
💡 It’s a signal.
Your brain on burnout is foggy, scattered, fatigued — but it’s not the end. It’s an invitation.
